NJ Priest McCarrick Vatican
The priest worked in New Jersey in the 1990s at the time of the alleged abuse and his allegations were documented in the report on McCarrick that the Vatican released last week. The priest provided details about the abuse to Metuchen Bishop Ed Hughes in 1994, the report said, but was told to forget about it “for the good of the church.”
Jeff Anderson, the attorney who filed Thursday’s suit, said he believed his client is the first “sitting cleric” to sue the Vatican. He did not identify the priest or say where he is now working. None of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit were named in court documents.
The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court in New Jersey. McCarrick, who was laicized last year after church officials determined he abused minors and adults, had been head of the Metuchen Diocese and later the Newark Archdiocese when the abuse alleged in the suit occurred.
