Pope Francis appointed the apostolic administrator sede plena for the diocese of Kalisz. According to the Vatican press office, it was Archbishop Grzegorz Ryś, Archbishop of Lodz.
The apostolic administrator, sede plena, directs the diocese when a serious obstacle prevents the ordinary bishop from holding office. The ordinary of the Kalisz diocese was Bishop Edward Janiak.
Bishop Janiak has been head of the Kalisz diocese for eight years. The clergyman became famous because of the latest film by brothers Tomasz and Marek Sekielski. “Hide-and-seek” presents the story of three men who were abused in childhood by priest Arkadiusz H. The film showed how the bishop of Kalisz Edward Janiak was supposed to cover sexual crimes of priests reporting to him.
What does this decision mean for the diocese of Kalisz? According to Deon, Pope Francis entrusted Archbishop Rysi with the duties of an ordinary at least for the time of prosecution of Bishop Janiak. It was explained that the apostolic ministry of Archbishop Lynx will end with the appointment of a new ordinary bishop in Kalisz, cancellation of the decree by the pope, or the return of Bishop Janiak if he is cleared of all charges.
